Discussion Meeting with Township Law Officers (Meeting No 13/2023) was held at 10:00 am (Myanmar time) on 30th of September, 2023.
The meeting was attended by U Thein Oo, Union Minister of the Ministry of Justice, Daw May Aung Thu, Permanent Secretary, and officials from other relevant departments.
Firstly, U Thein Oo, Union Minister of the Ministry of Justice, stated in his opening remark that ‘the Ministry is working on the double triad system for the rule of law, the Ministry of Justice is to be tasked with transitional justice in post-revolution Myanmar; therefore, the current legal and judiciary officials working for the ministry shall be working on the truth and reconciliation commission regardless of the cooperation from the others, the said officials shall have to participate in the drafting of the regulations and procedures regarding with the extent of the reconciliation process, such grand tasks require the Ministry to start the initiatives from now on, the Ministry of Justice is also require to act as the focal for cooperating and coordinating with the international legal scholars; moreover, to continue the Ministry’s non-judicial work such as organizing legal aid works, forming legal advisory bodies, the Ministry of Justice is organizing relevant trainings, then express the need to spearhead the efforts on the dissemination of legal awareness among the general public through public legal education programs; the Minister continued that these non-judicial matters are to be organizing by the law officers, therefore the legal offices and law officers requires high competency and urged to strives collectively toward such competency”.
Afterward, Union Minister U Thein Oo, Permanent Secretary Daw May Aung Thu, and Deputy Permanent Secretary U Min Naung Khine explained and discussed budgetary affairs, financial reports, expenses, and financial regulations and procedures to the law officers.
Subsequently, the Director General of the Prosecution Department explained and discussed the implementation works. Following that, responsible individuals from relevant departments answered questions raised by the attendees, continued the general discussion, and proceeded to formulate meeting resolutions and outline future plans.
Thereafter, Union Minister of the Ministry of Justice, U Thein O, confirmed the meeting resolutions and outlined plans. Then, on behalf of Union Minister U Thein Oo, Daw May Aung Thu stated in her closing statement that “she would like to thank the officials and law officers who attended the meeting; she also mentioned that the safety of the ministry personnel is the first important matter and second is to act with the utmost care, to not breach their mandates as the ministry personnel.” The meeting was successfully concluded at 1:15 pm (Myanmar time).
