Since 1948, “the 10th of January” has been recognized as Kachin State Day. Today marks the 76th anniversary of Kachin State Day.

The State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi addressed at the 71st Kachin State Day ceremony that when we gather, there is no distinction regarding which day belongs to which ethnic group. The State Counselor highlighted that Kachin State Day is a day for all ethnic groups in Kachin State, not confined to a specific group.

Furthermore, she also noted that Kachin State Day emerged contemporaneously with the year of the State’s independence, making it a symbolic representation of the Nation’s independence. The first president to attend Kachin State Day, the first president of the Union of Burma, Sao Shwe Thaik is of Shan ethnicity. This also signifies the unity of the Union. The presence of a Shan ethnic president at the inaugural Kachin State Day suggests that the occasion is inclusive of all ethnic groups. Regardless of the specific ethnic or state day, it belongs to all our Union-born ethnic groups.

On the auspicious occasion of the 76th Kachin State Day, a symbol of independence for all ethnic groups, we, on behalf of the Ministry of Justice, extend our heartfelt prayers for peace, harmony, and equality in every state and region of Myanmar, including Kachin State. We celebrate the values of freedom and justice for the Nation on this special day.
